Meeting Tips

The days of talking heads at a podium are over. For truly effective meetings, facilitators employ interactive methodology that create experiential learning opportunities and bring groups to consensus about decision items. Although this takes time, experts agree that the commitment generated is worth the extra effort. Some things to remember when planning a meeting

  1. Be clear about outcomes and products.
  2. Be sure the space is conducive to the work needs of the meeting - be sensitive to setting the room up so that people can talk and listen to each other in different configurations.
  3. Avoid the temptation to try to accomplish too much in one meeting.
  4. Identify what made your last successful meeting a hit and include those elements.
  5. Be sure to invite all the people who will be effected by the decision to the decision-making meeting - you can learn as much from your receptionist about your customers as you can from your marketing executive.
  6. Consider getting some coaching to help polish your facilitation skills so that you can create a safe and creative environment for better productivity.
  7. Know when to bring in outside help from a professional facilitator.
  8. Remember facilitator's will want to collaborate with you in developing the agenda and process for accomplishing your goals.
  9. Meetings can be fun if you create the space for people to be productive and creative and get to know each other.
