Organizational Development
John Murphy has been an organizational development consultant since 1989. He has
consulted to businesses and non-profit organizations, large and small, in Cleveland and
across the country.
Prior to becoming a consultant to organizations, John was a social worker. He worked as an
outreach worker with youth in a court diversion program in Lake County; directed the
Department of Social Service at the Cuyahoga County Jail; then directed the Lake County Center
on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse where he guided this community based chemical dependency
treatment center through its transition from a grass roots, quasi-professional group to an
accredited professional organization.
As a department manager and agency director, John developed a lively curiosity about what
makes organizations succeed or fail. In the 1980’s, John began a formal exploration of these
questions. He enrolled in a post-graduate program on Organization and System Development
at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland; then moved to New York City where he earned a master’s
degree in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University.
Returning to Cleveland in 1989, John established his independent consulting practice. As a
member of a multicultural team, he consulted to the Greater Cleveland Roundtable, a group of
civic leaders charged with improving the region’s racial climate; initiated a diversity
management program at National City Corporation, a Fortune 500 company; helped the inner-
ring suburbs of Cleveland Heights-University Heights and Shaker Heights manage the
transition from all white to multicultural school districts; completed diversity assessments for
the Natural Resources Defense Council and Turner Construction Company; and facilitated
intensive diversity workshops for a host of businesses and not for-profit organizations. John is
on the Diversity Management Program faculty at Cleveland State University.
Having established leveraging diversity as the cornerstone of his practice, John concentrated on
rounding out his consulting activities. He collaborated with organizations in assessing their
strengths and weaknesses; identifying appropriate and feasible targets of change and
implementing change plans. In this context, he has helped social service agencies, schools
and school districts, religious organizations and government agencies develop strategic plans.
He helped implement a mentoring program at National City Corporation, trained critical care
nurses at University Hospital to mentor less experienced nurses and trained mentors of inner-
city high school students in the Future Connections Program of University Circle Development
Corporation. He has designed and facilitated teambuilding programs for teachers and
administrators in various school systems and social service organizations.
John has also consulted to various arts organizations funded by the Ohio Arts Council. John
holds a Masters Degree in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University and a Masters
Degree in Social Science Administration from Case Western Reserve University.
